A waste of time

I wanted to like this. I really did. But aside from the name, this movie has none of the charm and comedy of the 90s series we all love. The only cameos are at the beginning with Jo Marie Payton and Kellie Shanygne Williams. Both of whom are so overweight that they are nearly unrecognizable from their original parts. And they play depressing, not funny, characters. I think it's an absolute abomination that they dared use the series name without a single appearance by Urkel, who was the real star. Once the main part of the film starts, it's nothing but a garbled attempt at a Hallmark film attempting to center around a tired old body switch theme already seen in many films. I was seriously bored after just 5 minutes of watching and there was nothing that happened later that got me back into the film. You would do much better with almost any regular Hallmark movie. Or watch the original series again for some true comedy.

Tis the season for dumb romance/Christmas hybrid movies

I have no idea why EVERY single year they bring these lame chick flick holiday themed movies on TV. The ION channel shows them back to back all day on Saturdays throughout December. They have the most absurd plots - a prince of some country, a generically handsome man, getting stuck in a small town America and falling in love with a generically beautiful woman. Both are always blonde and blue eyed. Or some other variation of an unrealistic situation. Within the last few years, I've noticed they've been making these same movies but with an African American cast. Unfortunately, at least in my opinion, they're all have the same formula and structure: low budget, incredibly bad acting, and an overly simplistic storyline. I came downstairs to my family watching A Family Matters Christmas. Honestly, I didn't even watch it for five minutes until I saw how stupid it was. It did have potential - step siblings learning to accept each other and live together in harmony due to their parents getting married (and then they switch bodies. Which also could've been funny, but having three people switch makes it much more confusing than two) - but the characters were so cringe. With the exception of the kids (their acting performances weren't the best, but I'll give them a break), none of them were believable. Of course they had to include an overweight woman who's obnoxious. Seriously, she was so idiotic. Every scene she occupied involved her making people uncomfortable. Interjecting herself into a group and then talking nonstop. Jumping all up in this dude's face. Before that she showed him a painting she did of a Christmas tree with two bulbs at the bottom (a blatant sexual innuendo), and then he discovered she finished a whole bag of candy or whatever it was. After she got in his face, he ran out of the house once he saw the front door was open. So that reinforced the belief that men aren't attracted to plus size women. But then again, she came on too strong, and probably would've scared a guy off no matter what she looked like (by the way, that irks me. It's a double standard that was created by society and it's perpetuated in the media - if a man invaded a woman's personal space and did other creepy stuff, people would have an issue, but yet it's funny when a woman does the same thing towards a man. If you're truly in favor of gender equality, you should have a problem with either scenario). She was portrayed as an extremely desperate sap who cared about nothing else besides food and finding a boyfriend. That took away from the film's humor. It got annoying watching her drool and act pathetic every time she encountered a man. I am so tired of stereotypes in movies. Skinny women can act the same way! I have yet to see a movie where a beautiful, thin girl has low self-esteem. Overweight comedy actresses always play a part that's quite embarrassing. The ending was cute, but overall, this is for people who are easily entertained. Modern films in general are made for the lowest common denominator. I've never been someone who binges Christmas movies every holiday season, because so many of them don't offer anything unique or special. A Family Matters Christmas in particular was dumb and mindless. I caught the last half of it, and I still felt like I wasted my evening.
