The Greens' Big and Fun Adventure

From my fun meter, I put it pretty high. While Big City Greens The Movie: Spacecation is not the best movie based on an animated series, it's quite a fun film. The songs can sometimes feel out of place as a movie based on the series. But that wouldn't be able to contain a simple yet enjoyable story, solid animation, characters that can stand up from the show, and some fun comedy. I know there may be some that have missed the times Disney Channel would release their animated films as their original movies. If you're one of those people or that you're a fan of the series, then this actually is the one worth watching. As Disney Channel original movies go, I wouldn't consider this a masterpiece. But at least I'm happy to see the Greens getting their movie.

One of the Best Animated Films of the Year!

You know, with all my favorite Disney Channel cartoons being cancelled early, I'm still trying to fathom if this film is even real. When this movie was first announced, I was excited, yet concerned. Not that I didn't enjoy the show, I had already watched the first three seasons and found to be an incredibly comforting comedy. Not only were the jokes sharp, but the setting of Big City itself was more creative than I expected. Taking tropes I'm familiar with from family adventure stories, expanding upon them, and adding extremely intelligent lessons for both children and adults.

With the unique element of this show being the Green Family. I was delighted to discover, that the stereotypical looking farm family wasn't actually a stereotypical farm family. Cricket is a wild but creative force of nature, alway ready to challenge the world and explore. Tilly is the quiet, but intelligent big sister, that tends to keep a third eye open to settle down the worst case scenario. Bill is the overprotective and constantly stressed father, who likes to stick to tradition in order to keep his family safe. And Grandma Alice is a grumpy former war veteran, who's always ready to fight for her life, even when their's no one to attack.

These characters not only work off of each other well with their expressive personalities, but seeing them react to the giant world of Big City after moving from their tiny country neighborhood always leads to great comedy. These writers have a clear understanding of the power of reactions. So I'm glad that the space setting for this film wasn't simply chosen because of the popular movie trope. Seeing them react off of both outer space and the rocket ship leads to a ton of great slapstick and action scenes.

I was so worried that this was going to become an obligation film and just feel like a downgrade from the show. But only did it feel cinematic, but I was left laughing hard all day. I think my favorite element of this film was making Gwendolyn Zapp the main villain. She was reoccurring antagonist from the show and while I think Chip Whistler is a fantastic villain, I feel like a scientist villain pairs better with the theming of the adventure. And it gives us a great chance to look at her deeply disturbing psyche. Going into this film I already knew she was unstable, but here she goes full on bonkers. Cheri Oteri's Saturday Night Live energy really brings her to life.

Honestly this film is really solid, though if I had one complaint, it would be the use of the "liar reveal" cliche. Granted it makes sense for Cricket and Bill to argue, they have completely opposite ideals, and I can understand both sides of the issue. But I've already seen them patch up before in the show, so iI can usually predict where the argument will return and end. Though it does lead to a really fun climax at the end, so I'm not annoyed in the slightest.

Honestly I don't mind seeing Cricket being the secondary cause of conflict in this film. This is a show that encourages people to stick together when exploring new territory, so I like to see him later being challenged in the third act to remember his strengths, but also remember that he always has the ability to patch things up when things are at their worst. It's not a life changing lesson, but seeing him getting blown away by an explosion and then being sent miles away into space from his family plays into his deepest insecurities.

I remembered how torn up he was after his mother was arrested again during the "Chipocalypse Now" episode and I think it was a really smart choice to have his mother give him the first message of support after he reaches his most hopeless situation. It's a great moment that reminds him that he doesn't live a life of endless dead ends. Things we thought we lost forever can return. Just like how she was eventually released from prison.

I will say that you might enjoy this movie way more if seen enough episodes and get to know the character arcs of Nancy and Gloria. But overall I highly recommend this film.

Blast off with the Greens!

I had doubts about this movie. When I saw the teaser I thought it was just going to be a boring Star Wars rip-off. But it was actually amazing! I really liked the character development and growth (which you don't see much in the series), but I have to say, my favorite scenes were with the Dream Team.

I would most certainly give this movie a try! I loved all the Gwendolyn Zapp episodes, so I'm stoked that she has a full movie now! And the songs were (surprisingly) really good. I don't know who wrote them, but they should be writing for Broadway musicals.

That's all for now!
