Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) is a journalist with aspirations to work for Alette magazine. When her current job is lost when her company goes bankrupt, Rebecca is devastated to find she is $9000+ in debt. She, ironically, becomes a financial adviser columnist.
I went to this movie purely because of my crush on Isla, ever since seeing her in Wedding Crashers as the nympho obsessed with Jeremy (Vince Vaughn). It is without a doubt, a gigantic chick flick. Jokes that occur during the film, 90% of them have been seen in the trailer. Not trying to knock the movie, but that's a fact. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, laughed a lot and sat awwstruck by the talent showcased by Isla. She really showed her colors by hitting all elements of the emotion spectrum.
I was surprised that her co-stars are such big names; such as her parents being played by lovable John Goodman and Joan Cusack, with Edgar West being played by John Lithgow and her opposite of the film being Hugh Dancy. There's a truckload of "aww" uttering romance, "lol" comedy and it's great for all ages. It also has a lesson at the end: use credit cards wisely. But overall, it teaches you that only fairy tale romance is active in Hollywood, not in reality. In the real world, Rebecca would not have gotten back in the black side of finance.
The clichés damper the movie's rating, for me, but it's a very enjoyful movie and I wouldn't mind seeing it a few more times before it leaves the theaters. By the way, it's a great date movie. Recommended.

Money isn't everything to Rebecca Bloomwood, but shopping is.
Confessions of Another Shopaholic
I had the good fortune to buy a ticket to "Inkheart" about an hour early. When I went to the particular cinema, they said to just "Go in" The cinema was just over halfway through "Confessions of a Shopaholic" ...
I pretty much guessed by what was said what had happened up to that point... And indeed it was a blessing... Myself, a reforming Shopaholic :) It was a message to know there's more to life than buying stuff. Now my Shopaholic-ness was very different to hers. I'm not into high fashion, for me it's more books, mainly sci-fi, fantasy for the escapism, fantasy/sci-fi action figures and new-agey things like crystals, again more books and also pretty house things and fun stationery ... Now some things I need, but I did have a tendency to go overboard and have been badly in debt ... So ... vastly different shopping habits, though the movie helped me realise what I knew deep inside. I don't need a Harry Potter Knight Bus or a Jedi Master toy to rescue me... I don't need all this stuff to make me feel better - like Rebecca said in the movie, "shopping makes the world get better ... and then it isn't anymore..." It's like a high from a drug or alcohol, I guess ... or a sugar high - feels good at first, though that feeling is short-lived.
I thought the movie illustrated this *brilliantly* .. I was amazed to see so many people trashed this movie as 'insensitive' in an economic downturn... These morons seemed to miss the whole point of the movie ... and they saw the whole thing too, I'll wager. They would have seen how upset Rebecca got during the talk show ... How she realised she had a problem and repented... How she would not let her Dad sell the Winnebago ... How she went to 'Shopaholics Anonymous' ... How she used her mind and came up with a solution. She turned her *Dream* Job down at the end, as it went against her integrity - knowing it would make girls and young women into fashion/shopping addicts ... How's *THAT* for integrity?! How her imagination made mannequins seem to beckon to her with all this stuff... And how at the end of the movie, she was in that godawful bridesmaid dress and rag bag ... and they 'beckoned' to her with the flashy red bag and slinky shiny outfit ... You saw the temptation on her face ... the struggle ... And how she overcame it with sheer willpower.
These fools obviously missed the whole point of this movie - It was about OVERCOMING addiction!!! It could've been "Confessions of an Alcoholic" or a "Drug/Sex Addict" or "Confessions of a Gambler" or any other addiction ... about how they struggle with their addiction. Shopping can be a serious addiction too, but most people seem to miss that. Makes you wonder about the intelligence and integrity of some people what they see it right in their faces and miss the point and harp on and on about the opposite of what the movie was about. Duh. There's a long movie about these people. It's called "Confessions of an Idiot." ... The 100 volume DVD release has 5,000,000 hours of extra footage! ;)
I hope that many Shopaholics see this movie and like Rebecca learn to overcome their addiction and realise they are beautiful, shining souls and do not need a bunch of "stuff" to feel good. People suffering form other addictions can also use this movie as a parable to kick their addictions.
And more people pay their debt-collectors with one penny/cent pieces! HAH!
