'Gloria Bell' is a lesson in self-acceptance

Julianne Moore has always been a talented and easy to like actress. Here she plays her age, which could be considered brave as few of her colleagues would do the same. But for us singles in the same generation, it's reality.

At some point, we're no longer part of what we once were, and to hang onto the past is impractical, a denial of self. As stupid is to search for meaning in meaningless places or through meaningless activities, all the time constrained by the world around us. Why should society expect us to act in stereotype according to how long we've been alive? At some stage, it's more relevant if we're closer to death.

There's no glossy production. The dialogue is deliberately awkward, like life. This ensures that the casual watcher may not give this indie movie a chance but for those who are patient, or understand, it's meaningful and necessary towards the fact that we must love ourselves.. that we're not holes, instead the rock around which all must flow.

'Gloria Bell' is about letting go of what's not needed, and accepting oneself.

Gloria takes a toll

Gloria (played by Julianne Moore) seemed a rather unsympathetic character, wanting things all her own way and suffering terribly from First World problems. Arnold (played by John Turturro) was hard to fathom, but his being weighted down by his semi-ex-family at least elicited some sympathy.

Much as I can appreciate the (70s disco?) songs that run through this, they are used excessively and intrusively. It's as if the director felt it was necessary to play a mirroring song to underline what had just happened in a scene.

I had wondered if this was really about the problems of being defined solely in relation to one's family. But I think it is more straightforward than that and is simply about a person who finds her life a little lacking, but ultimately decides that making any real effort to change it is pointless.
