It's OK, but falls a little short

I absolutely love Shea and Jason's other work(s). Have followed them as artists/content creators for years.

It's a good concept, off the rip. I get what they were trying to do, because the imagination scenes are exactly how I believe Shea and/or Jason would think out imaginary situations.

But it's just too - nonsensical and farcical. Instead of owning up and telling his friends the truth, Miguel decides he wants to fight because he believes his friends will appreciate him more or something?

The plot misses me, but everything else - the friends' relationship, the awkward kid who wants to be a somebody, the imaginary situations - is solid.

Refreshing

I have to preface my review by noting that I'm 74 years old.

And yet, I really enjoyed this movie. Partly because I am a retired teacher/principal, so I sometimes enjoy seeing flicks about school life today.

First off, the title character here is entertaining and the actor -- Tyler Dean Flores -- seems very talented. He can be funny, sweet, angry, threatening...and convincing so. There were times here he looked to old to be a high school student, and other times he looked just right. Hope to see more of him.

I did find several of the costars just a tad annoying, although Christian Vunipola was pretty decent, despite what appears to be a lack of experience. I kinda watched this film due to one supporting actor in it -- Raul Castillo -- who plays the father here, and does nicely, but it's a rather small (but important) part.

One of the things that was really entertaining here was that the script wasn't always serious, or always humorous...it mixed things up. Some of the martial arts scene were entertaining and quite good...but funny...which they were supposed to be. Well done.

"13 Reasons why" was an all-dramatic mini-series that was pretty serious all the time. This is much lighter and simply fun to watch.

Fantastic Gem: 9 out of 10

I don't write reviews here very often, haven't done one for years, but figured I would for this since it's getting a low rating, obviously from haters that just don't get it. Maybe they just don't like heart in movies, so ignore the low rating, this is a fantastic film: feel good, sharp and intelligent. Highly recommend if you like these types of movies... 9 out of 10.

Aside from that, it has some very cool and fun fight scenes, with some hilarious takes on some iconic films, a tribute of sorts. Hint, the posters in Miguel's room pretty much set the stage for what you are about to experiences.
