Stale rom-com...

When I stumbled upon the 2012 Hong Kong romantic comedy "Tian Sheng Ai Qing Wang" (aka "Natural Born Lovers") by random chance here in 2023, of course I opted to watch it. I like Hong Kong cinema a lot, and with this being a movie I had never heard about, of course I had to watch it.

However, writer and director Patrick Kong only managed to put together a bland and generic script, and it was bland even for a romantic comedy. The storyline in "Tian Sheng Ai Qing Wang" was pretty much romantic comedy textbook stuff, so you know what you are getting here, for better or worse.

The acting performances in "Tian Sheng Ai Qing Wang" were fair enough, though I have to say that there wasn't much chemistry between Chi-Lam and Annie Liu, and the movie was held back from the lack of on-screen chemistry between the two. But individually, they did put on fair enough performances. I was only familiar with Philip Keung and Michelle Lo on the cast list.

I enduded up giving up on watching "Tian Sheng Ai Qing Wang" with 36 minutes to go to the end. But I was getting more and more bored with each passing minute, because the storyline was so bland, and the relationship between Chi-Lam and Annie Liu was stale and lacking sparks. And I have zero intentions of returning to attempt to finish watching the rest of the movie. And truth be told, I don't even care how the movie ends, as I simply lost all interest in the narrative and the characters.

If you enjoy romantic comedies, then the Hong Kong cinema have far better choices to offer than this 2012 movie "Tian Sheng Ai Qing Wang" from writer and director Patrick Kong.

My rating of "Tian Sheng Ai Qing Wang" lands on a three out of ten stars.
