Complex story

I found the Ruth Finley story to be very complex.

Sexually assaulted when she was a child, it sounds like she was afraid to tell her mother or turn to her mother for help. If her mother was the same dingbat that she was portrayed as, when she was younger, I don't blame Ruth for not trusting her to be there for her. So instead of going to mother, she disassociates and develops another personality to protect herself.

After the police find evidence that Ruth is committing these terrible acts to herself, and she is placed in a psychiatric facility, her mother tells her that she suspected that Ruth was being sexually molested. Wow! That must have been hard to hear that your mother did nothing to prevent this from happening and nothing to stop this perpetrator from doing this to another child.

I'm confused about the kidnapping and burning incident that happened to her when she was a teenager. Did this really happen, or was this her other personality making its first appearance. I know that the therapist said this other personality didn't develop until after her husband's heart attack, but no one seemed to focus on this incident or think it was significant to her current behavior. Goodness! Someone kidnapped her and burned her leg with an iron. Why did no one talk about that.

I also found it strange that Ruth confessed so nonchalantly to assaulting herself. Other people with multiple personality disorder usually don't know these other personalities exist until a therapist exposes them. Even then, these patients have difficulty believing that they exist. In this movie, the therapist tells her she has another personality, and she confesses everything. She doesn't say that it felt like she was watching someone else committing these acts, she just says yes I did it. So, did Ruth really have a multiple personality disorder or was she just seeking attention.

Yeah! I had a hard time wrapping my head around this story. The pieces didn't quite fit for me.

I thought Teri Hatcher as Ruth Finley did a good job.

worthless/insulting

Im going to protect my wife by taking her to the police, who are accusing her of being responsible for everything. Without sharing any of the information they told me. You would think he would say something because i mean... she's only his wife.... and he's only been saying it for the whole movie that he is going to protect her...

we know everything was in Ruth's head (an inferior twist thats been done a million times). During the second attack, she is thrown into the backseat of a vehicle, and taken deep into the woods outside of the city. But it turns out she drove herself out there, and then we can confirm she returned on foot to a gas station. So where is her car at? When did she get it back? She would have to walk back out there to get it, and return with it. Are we supposed to believe she walked miles and miles back out there to get her car to cover-up her story? Wouldn't her husband wonder where the car was? The writing here is awful because all they had to do was write Ruth being forced into the trunk of her own vehicle and driven to the woods by the assailants.

Its hilarious that during this second attack (which isn't real apparently) Ruth has an opportunity to scream for help when a pickup truck pulls into the woods. She sees this directly and doesn't make a peep. Why should we care about her if she doesnt even care to make an effort to be saved?

I'll be honest here, I'm not sure the real Ruth Finley even deserves a movie. She was a terrible person. Hiding behind her supposed "abuse" and "mental health" problems. She only stopped because she got caught.

No criminal charges, slap on the wrist. Hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted because of her bs.

This movie is basically one giant PSA about mental health. An awful one at that. Whatever message they were trying to convey i didnt feel it.

Ruth Finley is the original Sherri Papini. She led the way for people like her. Hoax/Frauds/Scammers.
